Exploring the Mind of an Underground UK Artist: The 'Ego' Interview

ree

Welcome to the interview Ego. Could you introduce yourself to the readers?

Im EgoX or Ego. An artist from Birmingham, England. Couldn’t quite put a finger on the style I have, always hated being put in a box. One moment I’m making R&B next I’m making the darkest trap song. I’m a melting pot of my inspirations like MJ, NE-YO to Quinn to Thug to Ghali, Sferra Ebbasta. If you were to put me in a sound it would be very related to the Current London scene especially YT because I think we have a lot of the same inspirations like I know they also really like Summrs.

How long have you been making music for and what inspired you to start?

I have been making music for a long time probably 6 years now just before the beginning of lockdown and really found my circle during lockdown. I was boxing and intended to compete but my body gave out and I needed something to do immediately to fill that gap. I was on TikTok at the time and heard a song from Quinn and when I found out they were around my age I decided to learn how I would be a able to record. Was a way to get me out of bed since I was bed bound due to the injury, haven’t stopped since.

What song of yours would you say is your favourite and if not the same song, what is the most underrated in your discography?

My favourite song out at the moment is Ego - Shades. Most underrated song is 'Got shipped' I feel like it really displayed my versatility from my melodic sound.

Is there any piece of advice of your own or something you've read/heard from somebody else that you think the reader should hear?

An advice I get a lot of times is ‘You can force a horse to the river but you can’t force it to drink’.

What are your goals for 2025?

My goals for 2025 is to show people that Ego exists. I’m not expecting my life to change immediately. Im about to graduate soon god willing and I want to be able to show the world and the wider scene that I’m here and this is someone that should be taken seriously.

Have you got anything you'd like to announce for the coming future?

I would have previously announced songs all summer and an EP but losing all my files due to an issue with my motherboard will delay those plans a little. But Gods got me so I’ll sorting it all out very soon.

Our slogan here at Macabre is 'Embrace The Unknown'. Have you got any examples of a time you've made the jump out of your comfort zone? Music related or not?

Every time I post or turn on a camera I’m out of my comfort zone. Always have and probably always will hate cameras. I am recently pushing myself to post much more and not being afraid or embarrassed about demanding attention because closed mouths don’t get fed. But yeah that’s a challenge for me because of fears of getting negative feedback and that affecting how I act or think while recording I don’t want to hinder that process, but now I don’t really care because anyone that truly sees what I do has nothing but positive things to say about the work so there’s no need to carry fear. It was all my own head

And finally, what would be your dream event to perform at?

My Dream events to perform are Wireless, Sanremo and Rolling loud. One for each country I wanna perform in one day. Wireless because I could never afford tickets to go when I was a kid so I want to go there for the first time as a performer. Sanremo to show black kids around there that they can be anything. And Rolling loud because also when I was a kid I saw XXXTENTACION performed there on Instagram, I thought that was the coolest thing so why not perform where one of my Goats performed plus it’s a classic.

Make sure to tune in Ego and keep updated following the links below. We'll be expecting big things this year...
